Discovering Ireland, Finding Myself: Emma’s Experience at IH Dublin

At IH Dublin, we believe that learning English is more than just grammar and vocabulary — it’s about stories, journeys, and meaningful connections. Today, we’re excited to share one such story: Emma’s.

Emma, a bright and curious student from Japan, joined our Young Adults Programme this summer. What started as a language course soon became something much more powerful — a personal journey of self-discovery, cultural connection, and growth.

Learning by Doing

When asked about her morning classes, Emma shared how different IH Dublin felt compared to school back home:

“In Japan, the teacher talks and we listen. But here, we figure things out ourselves. We do activities, we guess meanings — and that helps me remember better. Learning feels natural, not like homework.”

Emma particularly enjoyed the focus on communication and interaction, especially in pronunciation practice. She loved the way lessons sparked curiosity and allowed students to be active participants.

One-to-One Learning… and Guided Walks Through History

Alongside group lessons, Emma also took one-to-one classes with Adam, one of our experienced teachers. But these weren’t just traditional lessons in a classroom. They included visits to museums and local landmarks — with Dublin itself becoming part of the lesson.

“On the way to museums, we’d walk and Adam would tell me stories about Dublin’s history. He pointed out signs and plaques I’d never noticed before, even though I passed them every day. It made the city come alive.”

Inside museums, where the signage was often difficult to understand, Adam helped bridge the gap — explaining context, translating meaning, and guiding her through Ireland’s rich heritage.

“Sometimes, what you need is background knowledge — things locals learn in school. Adam gave me that. I learned so much more than I would’ve by going alone.”

A Personal Connection to Ireland

What made Emma’s experience even more special was her personal link to Ireland.

“My great-grandmother left Ireland during the famine and emigrated to America. I only found out when I was 10. I’ve always felt a bit in-between — not fully Japanese, not fully American. I hoped coming here might help me understand more about where I come from.”

And it did. Through her classes, walks, and conversations, Emma explored not just Dublin, but her own identity — reconnecting with part of her family’s past and embracing the cultural complexity that shapes her.

Emma’s Advice to Other Students

Emma’s biggest tip for other international students?

“Speak English as much as possible. Even if it feels awkward at first. You’re here to learn, and using the language — especially with classmates from other countries — is how you’ll grow. Be curious. Be open. And enjoy every moment.”

She also reminded future students to take full advantage of the opportunity:

“It’s a gift — from your family, your country. Use it well.”
